What Does Locally Made Really Mean?
I was talking with some of my colleagues who are also at Granville Island market, and the subject was about what it means to be a local artist who makes everything...locally.
Above: Some of our customers' favorite pendants! From left, clockwise: Infinity Love; our Granville Island booth; Mother & Child; Family of Four; Sisters; Joseph working on polishing his silver pendants.
What does it mean to shop locally? You're supporting artists who make everything here...with their very own hands. No, we don't source out our work to a different country, to pay someone less to do what we do ourselves. With each piece we produce, we handpick our materials, and spend hours on the design of each piece, perfecting each one. We focus our energies on each piece to produce something for someone special.
With my work, I say each sterling silver piece finds the right owner... each pendant belongs to a special couple, a special family, who get to 'wear' their loved ones with them and keep them close to their heart.
I don't produce so much inventory that I have to create sales to sell off my all my pieces. So it's a different way of shopping... a different way to run business than some customers may be used to.
So next time you're down at Granville Island, I hope you get to see and appreciate the artisans for what they live and breathe each day. Support local artists because you celebrate creativity, curiosity, and the quest for art that inspires & touches peoples' hearts.
